Sizable signs could cause big problems in Hawesville

HAWESVILLE, KY (WFIE) -

Some new signs in Hawesville are attracting the wrong kind of attention from local officials. It's because of their size.

City and County Officials tell 14 News the signs don't just stick out in Hawesville, they can be a driving hazard.

"I came down the hill to come to work and all at once, there was this huge sign on a building and I thought 'What in the, where in the world did that come from?'" said Judge Executive Jack McCaslin.

The owner of the building is letting different companies advertise on the building with huge signs.

"It just takes away from our downtown. We just don't want to turn our city into a bunch of billboards. I just think that we've been taken advantage of," McCaslin said.

McCaslin says besides being an eyesore, the signs could be dangerous for drivers.

"That particular location where that building is probably the most dangerous piece of road we got in Hancock County. That building itself's been run into a dozen times. There's going to be an accident there and the more signs you put on a building, that's going to have more time to look and more time for people to read signs and that's just not a good situation. There's going to be an accident there," McCaslin explained.

Not everyone is against the signs.

"They're not really bothering me at all. I don't see how it's hurting anything. Don't sit there and gawk at it. Keep your eyes on the road while you're driving," said resident Bryan Ashworth.

Still, McCaslin says both the city and county might take legal action.

"The county attorney and city attorney for Hawesville are working on some ordinances to limit the size of the signs and the amount of signs. It puts counties and cities in a position where we have to make an ordinance for everything," said McCaslin.

The future of the signs will be brought up at Tuesday's city hall meeting.
