Local sailor honored for career in Navy

A local sailor was honored Tuesday for his long career in the Navy.

Master Chief Nick Bergwitz will retire soon after serving his country for 30 years. The chief has flown a U.S. flag around the world including Corrigedor Island in the Philippines.

As part of his retirement, the Evansville Fire Department granted Bergwitz's wish to have the flag flown at a station in his hometown.

"I almost cried, in fact, even now I've got a lump in my throat because I feel very honored that he wanted to do that, and then the fire department wanted to do that," said Bergwitz's mother, Brenda Bergwitz.

Chief Bergwitz will be presented with the flag during his retirement ceremony on April 13th in San Diego where he is stationed.
