Owensboro Police using social media now more than ever

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

In January, Owensboro Police stepped up their game in the social media world. The department began posting more mug shots, security video of crimes to make arrests, and solve cases and it's working.

Social media has become a way of life for many Americans and law enforcement is using the media to better protect and inform the public.

"It's becoming so prevalent now. It seems like everyone has a smart phone. They're always trying to stay connected to each other," said OPD Officer Michael Hathaway.

"Any kind of social media there is, I use it. When one comes out, I'm there," said social media user Hannah Butcher.

Knowing that, OPD has begun using Facebook more now than ever.

"For us, it's the fastest way we can get it out to the general public about what's going on. Just recently this past week, we actually had a tip come in that helped solve on of our robbery cases within an hour," said Hathaway.

OPD says posting mug shots and surveillance video helps increase interest.

"I'm one of those that goes through there and clicks on the links and see what they're all about," said social media user Travis Flener.

"It's like Christmas morning. You don't know what's under the tree, and like, you don't ever get to see the footage so if it comes up on Youtube or anywhere like that. You're like whoa because your solving crimes like a detective," said Butcher.

"I think it does heighten the sense maybe a little bit of drama to the case," said Hathaway.

OPD isn't the only law enforcement agency seeing results.

"With over 40,000 subscribed followers, it was really revolutionized the way we in law enforcement do business. I think more people are willing to give us that information over social media websites versus calling locally at our post," said Kentucky State Police Trooper Corey King.

The OPD puts a new case on it's website almost every week.
