Two suspects in a weekend robbery that resulted in a fatal car crash were in court Thursday.

Dezmont Hogan and Nalakeio Bennett are facing a long list of charges in the Vanderburgh County robbery and chase, where another suspect was killed.

The prosecutor's office tells 14 News both suspects could still face some serious penalties.

Bennett and Hogan have been charged in connection with Sunday's burglary and deadly car crash on Big Cyntihiana road.

Thursday, they made their first court appearances.

"They're being charged with three counts. 'A' felony burglary, criminal confinement as a 'B' felony, and then 'D' felony theft. In addition to those charges, we've filed a 'criminal gang enhancement,' said Vanderburgh County Prosecutor Nick Hermann.

'Criminal gang enhancement' means both Bennett and Hogan allegedly committed the burglary under the direction of a gang. The enhancement means, if convicted, their sentences could double.

"It's an investigation that has a lot of twists and turns in it. Lots of things that are unclear," said Vanderburgh Co. Sheriff Eric Williams.

Williams remains tight-lipped on the investigation, but says they are interviewing anyone and everyone with knowledge of Sunday morning's circumstances.

"We think we'll be able to provide some clarity to it as things begin to come together and we feel like we got a good picture of what lead up to the events and what happened that night. And we'll be able to put together a good-sized file for the prosecutor to work with," Williams told 14 News.
