A young volunteer firefighter is being remembered Thursday night after the fire truck he was riding in, ran off the roadway and into a ditch.
Jeremy Tighe, 18, died in the crash which happened a short distance from the McCutchanville Fire Station on North St. Joseph Avenue.
Long before the sun came up, police, fire and emergency personnel paid tribute to a fallen comrade.
A tragic ending to what just minutes earlier had been a fairly routine evening.
According to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office, Tighe and fellow firefighter Brandon Cason cleared themselves from a carbon monoxide run at 8:01 p.m., but they never made it back to the station.
A 30,000 pound truck on its side with two firefighters inside.
Tighe, the passenger in the truck, didn't make it.
Cason was treated at the hospital for non life-threatening injuries.
Fire officials say he somehow lost control while driving, causing the firetruck to slide off the road and into a utility pole.
But now, it's something the dozens of volunteers who make up the McCutchanville Fire Department must face head on.
