Trash pick-up prices may be going up in Princeton

Posted: Updated:
PRINCETON, IN (WFIE) -

For the past 20 years, people in Princeton, Indiana have been paying the same fee for trash pick-up. That fee being $6 per month.

That may soon be changing.

Tuesday, Mayor Bob Hurst presented the City Council with the results of a study by Umbaugh & Associates.   It suggested the city should raise the monthly rate to $16.

A report presented to Hurst and the council Tuesday night recommended an increase of somewhere between $5 and $17. Hurst says he's leaning towards a middle figure.

"I think a ten to twelve dollar increase is realistic," said Hurst.

Resident Stephanie Sims disagrees. She says the potential increase would stretch her household's budget.

"That's a little bit much," said Sims.

Hurst also presented a sample ordinance and a pie graph comparing Princeton's rates with those of nearly 20 neighboring communities.   The graph showed Princeton's rates are 2nd lowest.

Hurst says the sanitation fund lost $346,000 last year, which has been coming out of the general fund.

The council is expected to vote on the rate change at their next meeting March 19th.
