The slow, dangerous downfall of a hill in Newburgh

Posted: Updated:
NEWBURGH, IN (WFIE) -

Just because the landslide is slow, doesn't mean that's it's not dangerous. The hill on the East end of historic Newburgh has been collapsing for about 9 months.

Officials tell us it is due to excessive rain back in the spring and local drainage problems. It can be fixed, but that's going to take funds that the town doesn't have right now.

The hill is located on the edge of the river, just above the old lock and dam, and below Newburgh's historic Lockmaster cottages.

When it first started to slip, town officials were most concerned about the cottages on top, but they received FEMA money to stabilize those homes.

Town officials say, elsewhere, the slippage is getting worse, and though it's blocked off by police tape, they want to make sure people know that it really is dangerous, and they shouldn't go near it.

Town officials will be meeting March 1st with NRCS representatives to discuss Federal additional funding. Until then, the hill will continue its slow roll.
