GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -
Gibson County's Habitat for Humanity is getting ready to start its largest project ever.
A year ago, a private property owner donated land to the Gibson County Habitat for Humanity. Now, several new homes are in the works for Princeton, Indiana.
"This is the first time that our affiliate has taken on a project of this size," said Executive Director of Gibson County's Habitat for Humanity, Jim Stephens.
Stephens has big plans of constructing six new homes in the next three to four years.
The first home will be built on Princeton's Central Avenue, and the last at an area on Madison Street, where a mobile-home park currently sits.
The first phase includes replacing mobiles homes at a mobile home park.
"What we have is a 15-unit trailer park," said Stephens. "Our plan will be to remove the trailers, and typically, we build one home per year. We do now have a strategic plan over the next three years to build six homes. So, we want to build one home this year, two next year, and three in 2014."
Stephens also says that while the organization is excited about the future builds, they will be very careful to not displace anyone, living at the mobile-home park.
"We'll take every precaution that we can to ensure that people aren't displaced. We're going to give the existing residents, at the trailer park, the opportunity to fill out an application and become a part of the family."
Stephens says planning a project like this takes a lot of time and effort, but that in the end, it's worth it to make a positive difference within the community.
Right now, that application process is open to anyone interested in the new home at the Central Avenue property.
Applications will be accepted for the Madison Street property this time next year.
Stephens says they are looking for anyone who has a living need, can afford a mortgage, and is willing to help build their new house.
