Last basketball game in New Harmony gets emotional

NEW HARMONY, IN (WFIE) -

The New Harmony High School basketball team held it's last ever home game Saturday night.

The story behind the game extended well beyond the sidelines, as the community came together to say goodbye to it's school.

"It is real emotional because, we're just not going to have a school anymore," said New Harmony graduate Donald Stone.

Saturday night, the New Harmony High School boys basketball team played their very last home game as the Rappites.

"This last basketball game was just meant to be a celebration. A celebration of all the wonderful things that have happened in New Harmony Schools over the years. We've had a great crowd and that's what people are doing, celebrating," said New Harmony School's Superintendent Fran Thoele.

Former band members, athletes and cheerleaders were honored at half-time.

Stone graduated from New Harmony in the 1940's. He says the school has always been a family institution.

"One grandchild of mine goes to school here now, one great-grandchild, but all of my kids and all of my grandchildren graduated from here," said Stone.

It seems that many in the New Harmony community are ready to take the next step toward the North Posey merger, but they will always be Rappites at heart.

"It's just something that we're all going to miss. We all miss it," said New Harmony graduate Sally Huck.

The last day of school at New Harmony will be May 22 of this year.

Stone told 14 News that he believes the community will easily blend in with North Posey, it will just take time to move on.
