EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Dense fog slowed traffic Friday morning and even forced some schools to cancel classes.
EVSC schools operated on their regular schedule.
"The fog is so thick, you can't see what's going on. It's very unsafe," said crossing guard Lindsey Yoder.
Yoder is a crossing guard for Bosse High School.
Friday mornings foggy conditions made her job extra challenging.
"I'm afraid the kids are going to get hit because they're crossing the road and the cars can't see them and if they're crossing the road and the cars can't see them, they'll run them over," Yoder commented.
Those were Yoder's concerns as students made their way to school across Highway 41, with little visibility.
The fog was thickest between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. when the morning commute was at its heaviest but by that point, the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation already had buses out on the road and had already made the decision to stay on a regular school schedule
"It really is a matter of we have to make the best decision we can by 5:30 in the morning. After that, we have buses on the road and we can't pull them back in because then we have kids that maybe if we took them back home there would be nobody there," said EVSC Chief Communications Officer Marsha Jackson.
Some parents voiced their concerns to school officials, some saying they thought there should have been a delay.
Jackson says when the weather is as untimely as it was this morning, everyone has to pitch in to keep the students safe.
"I do think it's incumbent upon all of us as parents and school administrators to talk to kids about driving safe, driving sensibly, driving slowly, being careful," Jackson told 14 News.
There were no incidents with any of the EVSC school buses and there were only a few fog related traffic accidents. No one was seriously hurt.
