"Dramatic changes" proposed for US Post Office

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON D.C. (WFIE) -

The United States Post Office wants to do some restructuring. The agency is proposing a way to save billions of dollars.

The Postmaster General says if the cuts aren't made, the agency will eventually become a burden to taxpayers.

In a letter to Congress, he proposed a dramatic list of changes.

He wants to cut more than 150,000 jobs from the payroll and increase the price of a first class stamp to 50 cents. It went up to 45 cents last month.

Delivery times for long distance mail would take longer and the agency would cut back to a five day delivery schedule.

That would make the elimination of Saturday delivery very likely.

The agency would also withdraw from the Federal Health Benefits Program which prefunds retiree health benefits.

President Obama endorsed the agency's restructuring plan in his budget last week, but Congress remains divided on the issue.
