LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Commuters in Floyd County, IN were hit with more of a traffic nightmare Thursday morning than they've seen during most of the time the Sherman Minton Bridge has been closed.
In preparation of the bridge's reopening, which could happen any day, the Indiana Department of Transportation scaled down the number of driving lanes on the ramp from Interstate 64 east to Interstate 265 in New Albany.
Crews previously had added a lane to help with the increased traffic caused by the bridge shutdown, but took the ramp back to just one lane on Wednesday. The change caused major delays for Wednesday afternoon's rush home and again for commuters making their Thursday morning drive to work or school.
Some drivers reported spending more than 45 minutes in traffic along I-64 east as they tried to get to I-265, and then another 40 to 50 minutes traveling I-65 south into Louisville. There was also a huge gridlock along Brown Station Way as drivers tried to get to I-65 from New Albany.
If the weather cooperates, INDOT said the Sherman Minton Bridge should reopen to traffic early next week. In the meantime, drivers need to plan extra time for their commutes because of the lane reduction on ramps at the I-64/I-265 interchange.
