Owensboro feeling out options for old armory building

Posted: Updated:
OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

The City of Owensboro will put out requests for proposals in the next couple of weeks for the old armory building. That's good news for those wanting the city to keep the building.

A recent study done by the Regional Water Resource Agency found that it is possible for them to build a storm water detention basin right next to the armory without having to tear it down.

Right now the plan is for the city to send out RFP's for the building and property.

Owensboro Preservation Alliance members who want to see the armory stay, say they realize the building still could come down, but believe this process by the city is a step in the right direction.

"The Preservation Alliance would encourage the city in their scoring system to give more weight to proposals that would preserve the building especially the front part of the building," said Gary Adams with the Preservation Alliance.

Officials plan to make recommendations to the city commission in June after all RFPs have been reviewed.
