Slow down in winter conditions

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Even though many of the main roads have been pretreated, any moisture on the pavement can suddenly re-freeze causing quite the challenge for drivers. Just ask Jeff Smith.

"There was nothing I could do to control where I was going. I just kind of had to hang on and go along with the ride,"says Smith.

What a ride it was for him last Friday night. He had just gotten off from work, at 14 News, where ironically, he had just posted a story to our website about icy road conditions. He knew to slow down and play it safe, but as he found out while driving down the Lloyd Expressway, black ice has a mind of its own.

"It just looked like, you know, regular road and then all of a sudden, you know that feeling you get when you lose control of your vehicle? I had no control over it," says Smith.

He says his truck started spinning around.

"My tires just kind of went back and forth because there was no traction," notes Smith.

He slid across both lanes before crashing into a guardrail.

"It smashed up the front end of my truck pretty good," says Smith.

He wasn't hurt and, fortunately, no other vehicles were involved.

"I'll probably be a little bit more cautious on ice or when I know there's ice around, even if I can't see it, go a little slower," states Smith.

When having to drive in snowy and icy conditions, definitely slow down.
