Smoking ban heating up

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

A packed house for Monday's City Council meeting. The proposed smoking ban for the City of Evansville is on the agenda and Aztar officials are lobbying to have the casino will be exempted from the smoking ban.

Not lacking opinions here as you can see behind me some people can't even find a seat here at council chambers.

Councilwomen Missy Mosby made a motion to table the ban and Council member Jonathan Weaver seconded it but it was defended.

In it's current form right now, it would prohibit smoking at bars, restaurants, and Casino Aztar.

Three-quarters of the audience here are casino workers who say they are worried the smoking ban would mean loss.

"They know our business, they know our customers, and they know the impact this would have on the business, so they're showing up to support us and support their jobs," said General Manager of Casino Aztar Ward Shaw.

Now some city council members have told me they may recommend changing the ordinance to exempt the casino.
