14 News Special Report: Tri-State Spring Forecast

Posted: Updated:
TRI-STATE (WFIE) -

So far, the Winter of 2011-12 has been warmer and wetter than normal.

The mild and moist conditions helped spawn 70 tornadoes in January, the third highest number on record.

La Nina is still going strong. Cooler temperatures in the Pacific Ocean cause a ripple-effect in our weather in North America.

The cold polar jet is suppressed to the north and warm, moist air flows across on the tropical jet. This pattern was prevalent last spring and looks like it will be in place again this year.

The 90-day climate outlook brings above normal temperatures and above normal precip to the Ohio Valley and much of the southeast.

This may lead to higher numbers of severe storms and tornadoes through the Spring.

This doesn't mean we'll see a repeat of last year's historic April 27th tornado outbreak, but above average numbers of storms and tornadoes are likely.

La Nina is forecast to weaken by late Spring and the longer range models suggest normal rainfall and temperatures for the summer months.

In response to last year's deadly severe weather events, the National Weather Service is launching a program called Weather-Ready Nation, an effort to make all of us more aware and more prepared to deal with severe weather.

Advanced radar technology is on the way to better identify the types of precip in clouds to enhance flood forecasting.

Of course, at 14 News, we continue to launch newer and better ways to keep you tuned to the weather.

Our free First Alert Weather app is an excellent tool to have on your smart phone to receive warnings and forecasts wherever you are.

Thundercall still provides warnings to your phone day or night. We also post warnings and storm info on Facebook and Twitter.

2011 taught us that technology alone won't keep you safe from severe weather.

You must use the information we generate and act on it.

Take time right now to come up with a plan for you and your family for severe weather and other emergencies. Know where to go and how you'll communicate and survive after a disaster. Practice your plan and make sure you have a stocked emergency kit.
