TRI-STATE (WFIE) -
The Powerball Jackpot has reached a new cash prize record.
Past lottery jackpots have actually exceeded the overall amount that is up for grabs right now, but the lump sum for Saturday's Powerball drawing is larger than it has ever been.
The Powerball has been a lottery mainstay for 25 years. But it has never had a payout like the one it faces now.
"This is a monster that's coming down the pike tonight," says Chip Polston of the Kentucky Lottery Corporation when Polston spoke to 14 news via Skype on Saturday.
He said the $325 million dollar jackpot is the third largest in Powerball history.
Should someone win the drawing, that person would have the option of collecting all $325 million over 30 years, or receive a lesser, although record-breaking, lump sum.
"The cash option for tonight's drawing is $202.9 million. It's the largest cash option ever offered in the history of Powerball. And the first time the cash option amount has ever been over $200 million," says Polston.
Polston also said that the odds of anyone winning the Powerball are over one in 175 million. But that doesn't stop everyone from chasing the dream.
"Go to the Bahamas and then take a trip to California after that. And go on a cruise," says Brittany Gentry when asked what she would do with the money.
Polston also said that if no one wins tonight's Powerball drawing, we could be facing a world record-setting jackpot for Wednesday night's drawing.
