Dubois Co. restaurant letting customers pick their price

Posted: Updated:
HUNTINGBURG, IN (WFIE) -

Imagine going out to dinner, and when it comes time to pay the bill, you're told to ignore the menu and name your own price.

That's what happening at a restaurant in Dubois County.

If you want the chance to pick your price, you'll have to go to the Old School Café on Fourth Street in Huntingburg.

Burgers are what the Old School Café as built on.

"Whatever you could put on a hamburger. Your basics, lettuce, tomato, onion, that's all I knew how to do," said the restaurants co-owner Bob Ahlemeier.

Three years later Ahlemeier's broadened his menu.

"I like their spaghetti, it's very good," said customer Betty Ann Brunsman.

For the month of February, Ahlemeier's telling customers to ignore the prices.

"When they come up to pay at the register, they tell us what it was worth and that's what they pay," Ahlemeier said.

"I'm game for something new, something different," said customer Alvina Fendel. "All depends on what it tastes like and then I'll give them a price."

The motivation behind this idea is to get more customer feedback. It's something Bob says he's always appreciated.

"If someone were to come up to me and say 'You know Bob, that really wasn't worth it' and then I would get the feedback on maybe what I could do differently.  Why wasn't it worth it and that's what this restaurant was built off of," Ahlemeier told 14 News.

In some places, a promotion like this could end up costing a restaurant, but in Huntingburg, Bob hasn't been shortchanged yet.

"The most common feedback we get is it was well worth the price that was on the menu," Ahlemeier said.

In fact, he says many people don't even know what the price was to start with.

"That tells me they like the food enough to not worry about the price and that says a lot to me."

This promotion is set to run all month long from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Bob says he's been getting such good response, it's likely he'll do this again in the future.
