EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

An Evansville woman was beaten and robbed last night as she walked along north Main Street.

The victim says the attacker choked her, and one point, she thought she would lose consciousness.

That attack happened on Main and Franklin around 9:00 p.m.

Although the area looks busy during the day, all of the southside residents 14 News spoke to say they avoid this area once the sun goes down.

"I make sure it is before dusk and if it's not, I hustle," said resident Joyce Holder.

"If you are out at night, have somebody that cares about you that can walk and be with you," said resident Ivy Faulkner.

Police say a 57-year old woman was walking alone near Main and Franklin, carrying her prescription drugs Thursday night when she was attacked by a white male, about six feet tall, with long sideburns.

Police say the man demanded the bag of drugs and began choking, punching, kicking and stomping on the victim. EPD says the attacker also took a necklace she was wearing.

Some residents in that area say they've also been victims.

"It's not unusual at all because all kinds of crack heads, winos will be walking around here, this is not a safe place to be," Faulkner said.

EPD says they do see a lot of crime in this area of town, but say an attack on a random victim is unusual.

"Everybody has to watch out for themselves, and if they see anything wrong, report it to the police," Faulkner advised.

Whether police catch the suspect or not, residents say they will continue to be viligant.

"I'm alert, watch where I go and what I do," said Holder.

14 News spoke to some residents who didn't want to go on camera who said they have had family members attacked and even had strangers enter their home.

Police say the victim is recovering and that she is covered in bruises, including around her neck and head.
