Update: Deaconess nurse fired for stealing meds

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

A Deaconess nurse is fired after Evansville Police investigate allegations that she had been stealing medication for months.

Police say the nurse at Deaconess Hospital has admitted to stealing injectable pain killers.

According to a police report filed Saturday, it says the employee took Dilaudid and Morphine.

"We were contacted by an employee of Deaconess Hospital that, during their daily checks of narcotics, noticed that one particular employee seemed to be removing more of a certain narcotic than the other," said EPD PIO Jason Cullum.

According to the report, a Deaconess Nurse suspected a fellow nurse of stealing the meds. Upon confronting the perpetrator, EPD was able to obtain a confession.

"During their conversation, it's my understanding, that they admitted to taking prescriptions that they weren't suppose to, and at that time they were dealt with internally by the hospital. Then they contacted us," said Cullum.

Just how long had this been going on?  Police say between six and seven months.

"They started going back several months into their record-keeping and noticed that it was a pattern. It looks like they went back into June or July of last year."

As of now, Deaconess representatives say they are handling the situation internally. Charges have not yet been filed.
