Toyota Indiana produces 3 millionth vehicle

GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) -

Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana reached a milestone with the production of its 3 millionth vehicle Tuesday.

"We are extremely proud of our team members' continued dedication to quality that has allowed us to reach this milestone," said Norm Bafunno, president of TMMI.

Amanda Culver has worked at the Princeton plant for 14 years, almost as long as the plant has been around.

"It's very impressive to think that I can remember many years ago, fifteen years ago, driving by and there was nothing here."

Despite 2011 being quite an eventful year for Toyota, demand is still high.

"We've had a very difficult last year with the tsunami and the flooding in Thailand, but we're doing our best to keep up with customer demand," continued Bafunno.

He says it'll take more than a couple natural disasters to slow this plant down.

The plant began production in 1998 with the Tundra pickup truck until 2008.   The Sequoia sport utility vehicle was added in 2000.  Sienna joined the TMMI lineup in 2003, and the Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle began production at the Indiana plant in 2009.

Toyota began exporting the Sienna to Korea in November. Toyota's Princeton plant employs more than 4,000 employees.
