POSEYVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Poseyville may have changed over the past century, but one thing has always remained the same, a railway has run through the town since the 1800's.
But now the railway is being dismantled, and the town says that's a change they didn't want.
The company says the railway hasn't been used in a year, so they are pulling it up and selling the metal.
They no longer ship grain out by rail, and they haven't in several years, so it's understandable that they would want to salvage it," Town Council President Bruce Baker told 14 News.
Still, Baker hoped the rail line would be an added incentive to attract businesses, "industrial development in particular would be less likely to happen without a rail, and I think it limits us on the economic development. "
Yet when the rail company offered to sell the tracks to the town, Baker says the city decided the cost outweighed any possible benefits.
But don't count Poseyville out yet, Baker says they are going to seek out smaller companies that don't need rail service.
Baker says he hopes the company will dismantle the rest of the railway, including the cross ties by spring.
