Food for Fines nets 18,648 pound of food

Posted: Updated:

The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library's annual Food for Fines program netted 18,648 pounds of food this year, surpassing its goal of 15,000 pounds.

The campaign, which allows customers to donate food to reduce their library fines, was extended this year to include the Thanksgiving holiday.

All donated food was given to the Tri-State Food Bank for distribution to local food pantries.

"Unfortunately, we know there are a growing number of people in our community that are not able to provide enough food for their families.  We are very pleased to be able to help these families while providing a benefit to our customers," said Amy Mangold, community relations and development officer for the EVPL.

The library has been offering this program for several years.  They collected over 13,000 pounds of food last year.
