EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
You may have heard of a national Craigslist scam that has taken advantage of people searching for jobs.
This Craigslist job scam comes has many variations.
14 News spoke with an Evansville man who was a victim of one of them.
James Sharp's been receiving strange packages and phone calls for a month now.
It all started after he posted his resume online, hoping to get a job.
After a few days, he got an email claiming to be from Craigslist, offering him a position as a personal assistant.
He says he'd never had an interview online before but he was excited when he got the job.
Sharp gave his new employer his personal information, including his credit card information, to set up his payroll account.
That's when he started getting strange phone calls from people saying their credit card had been charged by his.
When Sharp looked at his payroll account, he saw thousand of dollars in strange money flooding in.
The Better Business Bureau says it has been getting reports of scammers operating under the Craigslist name for about a month.
Tom Bozikis, VP of Bureau Operations for the BBB, says sometimes scammers will target a victim more than once, "another group will come along, and connected with the first group and say, 'we want to help you, we know you've been victimized, we want to help you get your money back.'"
Now Sharp is back to looking for a job but with a healthy dose of cynicism.
