MADISONVILLE, KY (WFIE) - Several months ago, 14 News told you the story of a Long Island family's dog that alerted them when their young son's blood sugar was high.
That story captivated a Madisonville family with a 3-year-old diabetic child, Aiden.
They hoped for the same kind of life saving help and Monday, their diabetic dog arrived.
Within only a couple hours of meeting each other, Piper the dog alerted Aiden that his blood sugar was high, marking the beginning of what looks to be a very special bond.
Aiden was diagnosed with Type One Diabetes this past August.
His mom, Beth Turmero, says it is challenging because he can't tell her when he's having a sugar low.
When Beth saw a clip of a young boy with a similar condition receiving his diabetic alert dog, she knew this was perfect for Aiden.
"I was just amazed by the story," Beth told 14 News. "So I started making phone calls the next day and called your station and got the name of the kennels."
Beth says she started various local fundraisers to raise money for the dog, which can cost between $15,000 and $20,000.
Warren Retrievers in Virginia delivered Piper, Aiden's new diabetic alert dog.
Trainer Cheri Campbell will be there to frequently check up on the family.
She says it's often a seamless transition.
Piper will detect any change in Aiden's blood sugar through the dog's strong sense of smell.
Then the dog acts. "Some bark, some whine, some will nip at the diabetic, maybe go over and nip at mom and dad," Cheri says.
Beth is ready to act when Piper does, "we can make adjustments in his insulin or give him a snack or do whatever we need to do to regulate his blood sugar levels."
Beth hopes more families discover the miracle of a diabetic alert dog like Piper. "We've just been so excited to get her and she's going to be a little life saver for Aiden."
