Test predicts pregnancy odds

According to the CDC, 11.8 percent of women cannot have children.

There is new technology that can predict a women's ability to get pregnant with promising results.

What if there was a simple blood test that could actually tell you if your biological clock is ticking fast or slow?

Now there is a test that can actually tell the quality and number of eggs you have to get pregnant with high accuracy.

"We know there are multiple causes of infertility and one of the most potent causes of infertility is a low number of eggs," says Dr. John Schnorr with the Southeastern Fertility Center.

A reproductive endocrinologist, Dr. Schnorr says a number of reasons can cause that low number of eggs.

Dr. Schnorr says genetics, chemotherapy, radiation, and a short menstrual cycle are risk factors but the highest risk factor he says is age.

"Egg number starts high at birth and gradually goes down over time as you get older and we have women come in and say I want to have a baby in the future not right now but I want to know if I am fertile," said Dr. Schnorr

The Antimullerian Hormone Test, or AMH, can be done by a fertility doctor or an OBG/YN.

"A study came out in April of 2011 showing that this AMH hormone is the best predictor of fertility from an egg perspective than any other hormone we have been using."

Doctor Schnorr says that the test has been used for about a year and a half now and is yielding promising results.

"It appears that AMH may be a new tool in our tool box which can help us understand egg number and quality and were using it routinely for couples with infertility," Dr. Schnorr said.

Dr. Schnorr says unless you have risk factors the test is usually done on women ages 35 and older and costs anywhere from $60-100.

The AMH test is one of several tests that can be done to complete an evaluation of why you may not be conceiving.
