Taking a Stand: Memorial Day

Posted: Updated:

By WFIE's Vice President and General Manager Nick Ulmer

As we approach this Memorial Day weekend I'd like to wish you and your family a safe holiday.

This is a time to remember our Veterans and the men and women in our military who continue to serve our country.

There is a poem called ½ man, ½ boy, ½ woman, ½ girl, that can be a poignant reminder for all of us - here's just a portion:

The average age of the military man and woman is 19 years.

He and She are a short haired, tight-muscled kid who,

under normal circumstances is considered by

society as half man, half boy, half woman, half girl. Not yet dry behind

the ears, not old enough to buy a beer, but old

enough to die for their country.

Just as did their Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, they are paying the price for our freedom. They are the American Fighting Soldier that has kept this country free for over 200 years.

They ask nothing in return, except our friendship and understanding.

Remember them, always, for they have earned our respect and admiration with their blood.
