HAUBSTADT, IN (WFIE) -
The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-2 tornado hit the town of Haubstadt, as well as Posey and Vanderburgh Counties on Wednesday night.
Haubstadt residents Michael and Nancy Blackard say the noise from the drying humidifiers is the hardest thing to get used to. The tornado took out part of their roof, flooding their living room, office, and two of their bedrooms.
The couple says they're making use of only three rooms in their house, while most of their belongings are drying out in the garage.
The NWS team says the tornado packed winds of 125 miles per hour, but there were no injuries or fatalities. The team says the tornado started north of St. Wendell where trees were damaged, along with a machine shed. As it moved across Highway 65, power lines were taken down.
The tornado then moved north of Nisbet and crossed Interstate 64. At a farm north of Interstate 64, a house was severely damaged and four barns were destroyed. According to the NWS team, the tornado ended five miles northeast of Haubstadt.
National Weather Service Science and Operations Officer Ron Przybylinski says the damage was key in naming Wednesday night's storm a tornado.
"A tornado often shows convergent damage compared to wind damage, which is often divergent, or spread out like a starburst. We saw quite a bit of convergence, and a lot of tree damage."
Luckily, much of that damage is already cleaned up. Haubstadt Town Council President Kenny Reinbrecht says a large number of volunteers have been helping out since the storm hit.
Reinbrecht says they will have another clean-up day next Saturday if enough people call town hall in need of assistance.
We'll keep you updated.
