The Hopkins County Sheriff's Office is working closely with the Commonwealth Attorney to solve a murder investigation in Earlington.

Deputies say on Saturday, 2-year-old Kaleib Higgins was taken to Regional Medical Center in Madisonville, but died forty-five minutes later. An autopsy confirms that Higgins died of multiple blunt force trauma to his head and body.

That same day, his father's live-in girlfriend, 28-year-old Alexis Mayes was arrested and charged with murder.

14 News spoke with several neighbors, including one that was just moving in the day that Higgins was killed. They say this is unheard of for their neighborhood.

Neighbor Barbara Vanwinkle has called Earlington home for the past eight years. She didn't know the family that had moved into the house down the street from Tennessee, but says she never expected something like this to happen just a few doors down.

"This neighborhood is usually very quiet, there's mostly retired people here, and nothing really goes on. It's just a regular hidden town in America."

This case is ongoing.

If anyone has any information that may help solve this case, please contact Detective Matt Sanderson with the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office at 270-821-5661.
