ST. PHILIP, IN (WFIE) - Ambulances were called to Yellow Leaf Road in St. Philip Thursday afternoon after a Posey County sheriff's deputy and another man were injured.
Indiana State Police say the deputy was attempting to serve a warrant with support from ISP when around 1:30 p.m. to Brandon McManomy, 24.
ISP were serving a warrant for a previous rape charge in KY.
"At first I thought, 'oh something happened to somebody. Then when I saw all the police cars and news people, I thought no, something else is going on in this neighborhood'," neighbor Carolyn Adler says.
Thursday afternoon was a little different than Adler and her husband Gary had planned.
"They're just great neighbors. This is a great neighborhood. Just surprised something like this could happen," Gary says.
Posey Co. Sheriff's Deputy Dan Montgomery and Trooper Kylen Compton entered the home where suspect was living with his parents.
The father indicated that the suspect was downstairs. When officers told him he was going to be arrested, McManomy pulled out a four-inch multi-purpose knife and stabbed his own throat several times.
Authorities used a stun gun on McManomy, sending him to the ground. When Montgomery attempted apply handcuffs, the suspect slashed the officer in the face with the knife.
Officers used the stun gun on the suspect again and then handcuffed McManomy. Trooper Compton was not injured.
"Going into someone's home taking them to jail is probably one of the toughest jobs a police officer has to do. We do it almost every single day. We know there is always potential for a problem," ISP Sgt. Todd Ringle said.
Montgomery was taken by ambulance to Deaconess Hospital.
The suspect was taken by Lifeflight to St. Mary's and is in critical condition.
According to 14 news archives, McManomy was arrested in 2006 for previous battery on an officer.
Authorities say he dragged a trooper with is car, injuring him.
Neighbors, including the Carolyn Adler say while shocked, they're sending their hearts out to both of the victims.
"About the best thing I probably do for them, is to get them in my prayers. Keep the officer in my prayers, because I know him too."
