Owensboro offers tours of new Riverfront

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) - The City of Owensboro is hosting a sneak peek of the riverfront development project progress this weekend.

A lot has changed along the riverfront over the past year.

Anyone walking or driving by can see the cranes busy at work and the seawall going up.

The project is still about two years away from completion but crews have cleared land, installed a 140,000 tons of sand to make the property three times larger.

The next phase will start with the creation of the signature water fountain, and laying the foundation for the concession stands.

Project managers say $19 million will be spent on this phase of the project.

Riverfront Project Manager Tod Lolley says everything is on track to be completed by 2012.

The tours are from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The public will enter through a gate on Daviess Street and get to walk the entire four block length of the Smothers Park project.
