EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - Members of the Evansville Teachers Association will soon be voting on a three-year contract offer. On Wednesday, details of the tentative agreement were released to teachers and the media.
The Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation and the Evansville Teachers Association says their main priority was not only improving conditions for teachers, but also improving the outcome for students.
The proposed contract would take teachers through this school year and the next three school years. Although the new contract does not include a salary increase, it does include more money for teachers.
At a time when the state of Indiana faced a $300 million budget cut in December, EVSC Superintendent Vince Bertram says they are happy to say even though there were state cuts, there weren't any teacher cuts.
Bertram says, "We are beginning teachers at a higher salary, so next year teachers will actually start at EVSC with a beginning salary of $34,393, and that puts us at a very competitive position, not only regionally, but across the state of Indiana, so we are very pleased with that."
Bertram said the teachers will also be given a two-percent stipend based on their individual salary this month, or in December at the very latest.
In addition, teachers will receive a half-percent stipend for the following two years.
Bertram says, "With the new jobs bill that was passed by congress recently, EVSC is going to have an additional $4.4 million and we are going to give that money to our employees."
Keith Gamble, the President of the Evansville Teachers Association says he expects the contract to get the approval of teachers.
One more informational meeting will be held on Thursday, then teachers will have until October 25 to vote on the contract.
The ETA will tally up the votes. If the contract is accepted, it will be implemented immediately, but if not, they will be back to the bargaining table with the EVSC.
