OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) - Owensboro officials will break ground on the Riverfront Crossing project Friday afternoon.

City leaders in Owensboro say this is a big step toward the revitalization the downtown.

They say the newly redesigned area will be a scenic walkway between the County Courthouse and the riverfront.

But, they say it will also be a gathering place with a clock tower and room for businesses like coffee shops, bars and restaurants to open and bring more nightlife to the area.

Officials hope that will make the riverfront a greater tourist attraction.

They say the foot traffic should also help already established businesses in the area.

The groundbreaking is scheduled to start at 4:00PM Friday afternoon.

Members of the Owensboro Board of Commissioners as well as the Daviess County Fiscal Court are expected to be on hand.

We'll have more on this story tonight from our Western Kentucky Newsroom.
