OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) - City officials in Owensboro got a look at the work being done downtown on the riverfront during a boat tour Tuesday.

Engineers say the first phase of construction on the city's river wall is nearly complete.

Soon crews will start to build the proposed park.

The city says seeing the riverfront from the water gives a glimpse into the future downtown Owensboro.

"Owensboro is really going to have the riverfront on the Ohio River," said Mayor Ron Payne. "I said it, and I continue to say it, and I think you can get a better feel for that and really realize how awesome this riverfront is going to be when you get out there on the water and look at it."

The river wall project should be completed by next August.

The city will soon demolish the Executive Inn Rivermont. Demolition should start next week.
