VANDERBURGH COUNTY, IN (WFIE) - Despite the recession, three new businesses are opening up in Evansville, creating several hundred new jobs.

Next Tuesday, Evansville's first Menards home improvement store off Green River Road is expected to welcome its first customers.

Despite an ongoing economic slump, the store general manager said now is the right time to put hundreds of people to work and boost Evansville economy.

With just little over a week before Menards rings up its first customer, over 200 employees can be found all over store hard at work.

"We've been working on putting our shelving up and getting everything prepared for our stock," Evansville Menards General Manager Craig Millis said. "We started receiving stock two weeks ago."

The 240,000 square foot facility not only carries hardware, but pet supplies, groceries, and patio furniture.

Millis said coming to Evansville was a natural decision made by corporate offices and it will boost the local economy.

"We roll up our sleeves and get to work," Millis said. "Guest services is our number one issue. I believe Evansville is looking for guest service to be a number one issue to give their hard earned money too. I think we will fit very well in this environment."

Not only is Menards set to start their business on Green River Road next Tuesday, but a major restaurant chain is also expected to open their doors next week.

"Mostly we want to keep the Red Robin brand out in the community, keep it fresh," Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Associate Manager of Communications Jamie Minkin said. "And make sure our guests can enjoy Red Robin. Since it's the first Red Robin in Evansville, it just made sense to open one at this time."

The restaurant known for its gourmet burgers is on track to open next Monday, employing over 100 team members.

The Red Robin will be located off the Lloyd Expressway on Burkhardt.

As both businesses gear up for next week, Millis hopes the recession will not be issue.

"The economic downturn does not seem to have hit this area as bad," Millis said. "Hopefully, the other businesses opening are on the same terms as we are, great guest service to make it successful."

If you have had a chance to walk through Eastland Mall lately you know that Paris based beauty products company Sephora is scheduled to open April 17.

The store offers makeup, skin and hair care products as well as perfumes.
