Police say around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, a car lost control and hit a SUV driven by a family from Mt. Vernon. Both cars hydroplaned, and the SUV went over a guardrail on Interstate 565.
The coroner says 53-year-old Donna Barthel of Mt. Vernon was pronounced dead at the scene. Another woman, a man and a child in that SUV were taken to the hospital, but their names and conditions haven't been released.
The people in the car that caused the crash were not hurt.
The accident shut down parts of the interstate for several hours.
