Alcoa CEO Prepares For Strike

New Media Producer: Kerry Corum

Alcoa's chief executive officer says the company is training managers to operate 15 US plants should 9000 union workers strike.

The company's five-year contract with the United Steelworkers expires May 31st, and a strike is possible because Alcoa wants those workers to start paying part of their health insurance premiums for the first time.

In Indiana, Alcoa has about 2100 workers at it's Warrick County plant near Evansville. It also has operations in Auburn, Crawfordsville, Indianapolis and Lafayette.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting that CEO Alain Belda is hoping the company can avoid a major strike.

A union official says he's aware of the strike preparations, but says the company doesn't have as many managers to cover for striking workers as it once did.
