Police not amused with woman's trip to theme park

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - A western Indiana woman faces child neglect charges for allegedly leaving her three children in a filthy, rodent-infested home while she spent the day at an amusement park 100 miles away.

Thirty-seven-year-old Tonya Smith reportedly told police her children were supposed to be with relatives while she was visiting Holiday World and Splashin' Safari.

The West Terre Haute woman was formally charged Tuesday in Vigo County with three felony counts of child neglect. She remained jailed Wednesday on a $45,000 bond.

Police alerted July 2 by a concerned neighbor found the children ages 7, 10 and 12 - without supervision at Smith's filthy, rat-infested home. The children, all of whom had head lice, are now in the care of child welfare services.
