EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - A big step was taken Tuesday as local officials decide the fate of a possible new arena in downtown Evansville.

The Evansville Redevelopment Commission approved up to a $950,000 bond to pay for an extensive feasibility study.

The study will determine where the new arena should be built, what it will look like and the cost.

The bond will also cover soil testing and environmental reviews.

Tom Barnett, Department of Metropolitan Development, said this is a neccessary proccess.

"Without it, it would be a shot in the dark," Barnett said. "Whether or not we should do it, be like flipping a coin. And we don't think that's a good idea to do that with the future of this community."

The bond amount also includes money to get the project started if the city decides to ahead and build the new arena.
