Update, Thur 2:50 pm: University of Evansville board of trustees responds to President Dr. Stephen Jennings DUI charge.
Niel Ellerbrook, chairman of the University of Evansville board of trustees, says he is aware of the arrest and is deeply saddened for Dr. and Mrs. Jennings.
"The Board feels he has done a wonderful job for this university and this community, and it is our intention to do whatever is needed to help Steve," said Ellerbrook.
Update, Thur 12 pm: University of Evansville President Dr. Stephen Jennings released the following statement to 14 News:
"I have obviously made a very serious mistake, and I apologize to the campus community and the community at large. I will take every necessary action to ensure that it doesn't happen again. Because this is my first offense, I have been offered enrollment in the DADS (Drug and Alcohol Deferral Service) program and have taken that step this morning. I assure you that I will successfully complete this program, and I will work with the University and any other appropriate organizations as may be requested or necessary, " said Dr. Jennings.
Previously: Evansville police say University of Evansville President Stephen Jennings was arrested for drunk driving.
It happened just after 10 pm Wednesday on the Lloyd Expressway.
Evansville police say Jennings was swerving off the road, kicking up dust and almost hit some construction barrels.
Police say Jennings' blood alcohol level was .14.
He was arrested and taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail. Jennings faces multiple charges including operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
