Hartke in Front?

The election is one week away and the Democrats are saying Bryan Hartke is leading in the 8th District Congressional race.

Polling by the state Democratic party says the incumbent John Hostettler is rapidly losing ground and the race is very close.

Republican John Hostettler is seeking his fifth term in Congress. Hostettler campaigned at the Evansville Rotary Tuesday while Hartke campaigned in Terre Haute.

When asked about partisan polling showing Hartke in the lead, Hostettler spokesman Jim Banks said that's inconsistent with what he's seen and heard and Banks remains confident the incumbent will be re-elected.

But state and national Democratic sources says phone and field surveys show Hartke not only gaining ground, but taking the lead. The Democrats say Hostettler has a low approval rating and there's a low percentage of voters who feel Hostettler should be reelected.

They say Hartke's strength in Vanderburgh and Vigo counties is "exceptional." Democrat sources say the Hartke campaign has gained momentum in the past three weeks.

But of course we'll find out who's right when voters go to the polls next Tuesday.
