HAWKS-PACERS

Pacers rally past Hawks 101-85 to even series

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Paul George scored 27 points and George Hill had all 15 of his points in the second half, leading the Indiana Pacers to a 101-85 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series.

The Pacers and Hawks are tied at a game apiece heading into Game 3 in Atlanta on Thursday.

George was especially effective even though he spent much of the night defending Hawks point guard Jeff Teague, who had 14 points. Paul Millsap finished with 19 for Atlanta.

The first 24 minutes looked like an exact duplicate of Game 1, but the Pacers pulled away with a 31-13 third quarter.

Top-seeded Indiana took its first lead since the first quarter on Lance Stephenson's three-point play and closed the quarter on an 11-0 run to make it 79-65.

INDYCAR-CASTRONEVES PENALIZED

IndyCar puts Castroneves on probation through June

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - IndyCar has put Helio Castroneves on probation through June because he violated the series' social media policy.

Castroneves was penalized Tuesday for a tweet sent from his official account after the Long Beach, Calif., race on April 13 that criticized race control for not penalizing drivers during the race. The tweet included an image of IndyCar's official logo with a "thumbs down" symbol photo-shopped in the center.

The tweet was deleted not long after it appeared, and Castroneves later posted that his sister had sent the missive from his account without his permission.

"I apologize and the steward were correct with the call made," Castroneves posted.

Castroneves was fined $30,000 in 2011 for calling the race director "a circus clown" on Twitter.

DIAMONDBACKS-CUBS

Hammel, Olt lead Cubs past D-backs

CHICAGO (AP) - Jason Hammel pitched seven strong innings, Mike Olt hit a three-run homer and Nate Schierholtz drove in a pair of early runs to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 9-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.

Hammel allowed just one run and four hits in seven innings to lower his ERA to 2.60.

Olt still is batting below .200 for the season but has four homers and nine runs batted in.

The Cubs, who've won three of four, have won back-to-back games for the first time this season. They last won consecutive games on Sept. 9 and 10 of last season against the Cincinnati Reds. Their last consecutive home wins came on Sept. 4 and 6 against Miami and Milwaukee.

Brandon McCarthy managed to lower his ERA from 7.11 to 6.23. He allowed five runs - one earned - and seven hits in five innings.

WHITE SOX-TIGERS

Cabrera homers, Tigers beat White Sox 8-6

DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer, Justin Verlander pitched seven solid innings and the Detroit Tigers held on for an 8-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.

Cabrera was 4 for 23 on this homestand before going 3 for 5 on Tuesday - including a homer and a double off Chicago's Charlie Leesman, who was called up from the minors to start in place of an injured Chris Sale.

Verlander had little to worry about after allowing a first-inning homer to Jose Abreu. He allowed two runs and eight hits, striking out seven and walking two.

Chicago's Dayan Viciedo had a career-high four hits, and Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer in the ninth to pull the White Sox within two. Joba Chamberlain got the final out for his first save, retiring Alexei Ramirez on a liner to left with one on.
