OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) - On the weekend of the Barbecue Festival, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear officially proclaimed burgoo as the official state dish of Kentucky.
State Representative Jim Glenn said he presented the bill which passed the house, but it stopped in the Senate, so Glenn called the governor.
"Making it a very useful dish as far as economic development," Glenn said. "If you go out on the west coast in Washington state they use salmon. They've got restaurants out there that just serve salmon burgers and french fries. Economic development. They have tourism districts where you can go into gift shops and buy smoked salmon and take it back with you. We want to do the same thing with burgoo."
