EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - The first round of layoffs for Evansville's Whirlpool workers starts Friday as the plant begins shutting down for good.
President of the Local 808 Darrell Collins said starting at 2:00 on Thursday, the 50 pound ice maker department will stop production for good.
That shut down involves 60 workers.
Collins said those 60 employees will return on Friday to work in different parts of the plant for the day.
He said a total of 465 workers will complete their last shift at the plant Friday as well as attend a number of retirement parties that afternoon.
In the meantime, the union set up a computer lab to help those who lose their jobs on Friday start applying for unemployment benefits.
"Everybody's kind of dreading the whole, the whole thing," Collins said. "Just ah, we grew up with these people. We're all friends and family. Everybody's just kind of dreading the end, looks like it's getting pretty close."
The union will also hold another rally outside the plant on Thursday afternoon starting at 2:00 as the ice maker department stops production.
