ROBARDS, KY (WFIE) - Thirteen students are hurt when a Henderson County school bus tips onto its side.

It happened around 7:00 Wednesday morning on Busby Station Road just off Kentucky 283.

The students made it out safely.

A press release states that a student brought the bus driver, Gail Harper, some cigarette butts they found on the back of the bus.

Officials said Harper became distracted and dropped the right wheel off the shoulder of the road.

They say she overcorrected and the bus tipped over on the opposite side of the road.

Keegan O'Daniel, Director of Transportation for Henderson County Schools was notified shortly after.

The students, ranging from first grade to high school, had only minor injuries.

O'Daniel credits one of those students, Cody Book from Henderson County High School, with helping.

Book got students out through the back door, before the driver could.

She was trapped by her seatbelt.

O'Daniels says students were safer because they weren't restrained, "If every student had needed to be cut out of their seat, that would have prolonged the rescue efforts."

After Harper cut herself out, fire officials say she helped the most injured student.

"He was complaining of neck and back pain, and she used the bench seat to get him out of the bus," Lance Wayne from the Robards Fire Dept. told our team.

"I feel confident that the driver was doing everything she could to minimize the situation," O'Daniel said. "But I want that verified with facts."

O'Daniel says there will be a committee to investigate.

That's something he feels is crucial, after an accident that carries the most precious cargo.
