HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) - Henderson County Schools have notified parents that Bend Gate Elementary is closed Monday.
School officials say a large number of students and staff are ill with the flu or flu like illnesses.
Henderson County Schools sent out a call to parents that only Bend Gate Elementary is closed Monday. Other Schools are open.
Statistics from the Kentucky Department of Public Health show that flu cases tend to increase around this time of year.
According to the Kentucky Department for Public Health influenza report from the week of December 8th, there have been 217 confirmed cases of the flu across the commonwealth. That number increased by 61 cases from the prior week.
The KDPH classifies the flu outbreak as “Regional." As of the latest report, counties across the state are reporting flu cases, but the majority are coming from the Louisville area and surrounding counties.
That information is subject to change in the coming weeks.
Indiana is seeing a significantly less number of cases. The Indiana State Department of Health is reporting just 98 confirmed cases of the flu or flu like illnesses, an increase of just 19 from the previous week.
The Center for Disease Control says the best ways to prevent catching the flu are to wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough, avoid contact with those who are sick, stay home if you are sick. avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and practice other healthy habits.
