OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) - The Riverport Authority has been awarded $11.5-million in federal transportation funds.
Riverport officials say they want to use the money to widen Kentucky 331, which is the only way to get to the Riverport and several other industries.
Right now 331 is just a one-lane highway with about 5,000 vehicles traveling along it every day. Almost half are large trucks hauling material.
City and county officials say it was becoming a safety issue, especially for people that live in the area. After the third time applying for grants for the project, 331 can now finally be expanded to a three-lane highway from 60 to the Riverport.
Officials with the Riverport say this is a major win for the area, and future growth.
