GIBSON CO., IN (WFIE) - A 29-year-old woman was killed Wednesday morning after one of the many slide-offs that happened while it was snowing.
Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear confirms 29-year-old Mary Russell of Winslow died after a slide-off crash in Gibson County.
He says her cause of death is drowning.
We’re told the crash happened on 1275 E.
14 News' Aria Janel spoke with father and son Shannon and Preston Lewis who stopped to help after Russell ran off the road into a water filled ditch. They were in the freezing water for several minutes working to free Russell from her car.
“There isnt really any other option, but to get out and try and help. It’s just the right thing to do, as humans helping other humans. It’s the way society functions," said Preston.
As it turns out, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of the Lewis family. Preston, a teenager, has been getting treatments for leukemia for the last few years, and his mother was recently diagnosed with brain cancer.
Russell leaves behind four children.
